Bartók and Enescu – two prominent composers of two nations. The names of Bartók Béla and George Enescu were not merely known in their homeland, they had a significant reputation in Western Europe, as well. They had approximately the same conception of folk music: it has to be preserved, but the emphasis is on the method of how to preserve it. In Enescu’s words ’folk music cannot be transfigured without losing its aura. […] it can be turned into rhapsody only by juxtaposition and transformation.’ A friendship evolved between the two composers, probably both because of their similar ways of thinking and because of their shared ideals.

They had the talent to create a unique voice in their oeuvre, continuing the traditions of their nations, and completing them with the new tendencies of the 20th century. They were also influenced by national romanticism, Wagner was an especially important idol for Enescu and similarly Erkel Ferenc for Bartók. Such different mentalities as The Second Viennese School’s chromaticism and compositional techniques, Faure’s French musical world, and the neo-tendencies are combined in their work. However, the most important influence for them was, without doubt, folk music.

The pedagogical tendency coexists with national traditions in Bartók Béla’s piano series, named ‘For Children’. The first page of the score states that these are ‘small pieces for beginners (without octaving) based on Hungarian and other nations’ folk tunes’. As many other important compositions in the history of music, this piece was ordered by a publisher. He wanted simple and curriculum-like pieces for youngsters, perhaps because at that time the repertoire for the beginners (except for Bach’s and Schumann’s works) was musically valueless. Bartók himself played ‘For Children’ selections in his concerts regularly which indicates that he regarded these pieces as true miniature artworks.

Bartók planned his Romanian Folk Dances to be the continuation of the series ‘For Children’ (based on mainly Hungarian and Slovakian folk tunes). He wanted to keep Romanian dances in their original form, without any changes. This piece was originally written for piano, but it was transcribed for both chamber orchestra and for violin and piano. Romanian Folk Dances was the most often played composition of Bartók in his lifetime.

15 Hungarian Peasant Songs represents Bartók’s effort to create a major classical musical piece from authentic folk material. It is clear from its tone that this work was written for stage performance, using the musical tools of the romantic piano tradition.

In case of the violoncello-piano transcription of Bartók Béla’s Second Rhapsody, the folk musical material is more plain, the piece is set in a more popular style. The main goal was to popularize and introduce to the urban audience the newest Transylvanian, Romanian and Hungarian folk tune collections. The rhapsody consists of two parts according to the tradition of the 19th century: lassú/slow and friss/fast. Bartók encountered instrumental folk music in Transylvania, which was the source of the Hungarian-Romanian folk dances.

Although George Enescu was a first rank violinist, he had great affection for the cello too, maybe because although he knew how to play this instrument he never played it in public. ‘A la roumaine’ is also rooted in romanticism – this is probably Enescu’s most personal work. The piano part is surprisingly unusual, it reminds us of the sounds of a cimbalom. The duality of romanticism and folklore culminates here as a new musical style.

Enescu’s Moderato malinconico is a kind of synthesis of modern musical language and national musical culture. The most important innovation in this piece is the visualization of gypsy musicians’ violin technique. The three-parted melody spins through the whole piece evoking the memories of rural life.

Finally it is inevitable to ask the question if we have to speak its language to grasp a nation’s character and feelings. Although the two composers were different personalities, they understood and honoured each other and pursued the same goals. It has to be emphasized that they served our traditions exquisitely. It is our turn now.

(@Lili Békéssy)
